How to Create a Winning APA Style Dissertation


A dissertation is a significant step forward in your academic career. It takes much preparation and time gathering material, conducting a research and analyzing, and, writing and formatting your paper. None of these stages should be underestimated for the overall success of your dissertation. If you want to obtain a strong, well-crafted academic paper that is formatted in APA style, the following advice might come in handy:

  1. Plan out your work.
  2. You should have plenty of time available for several drafts before your final version is created. Do not put your writing off; start making the first drafts as soon as enough information is obtained. Take breaks to look at your paper with fresh eyes.

  3. Work with your drafts.
    • Remember that your dissertation should consist of the following parts (according to APA style): title page, table of content, abstract, body chapters, and references. However, some numeric data can be included in a separate list of figures or tables immediately after the abstract. The acknowledgments page is optional.
    • Write an abstract.
    • Be sure to make it no longer than 250 words.

    • Work with your chapters.
    • Brainstorm and write down all the ideas and thoughts you have. This will be your first draft, and it shouldn’t be censored.

      After a break, write your second draft. Some new information may be added now, and something unnecessary may be thrown away. Look for grammar incongruities, punctuation mistakes, etc. Check if the in-text citations are properly formatted. According to APA style, the author’s last name and the year of the material publication should be placed at the end of your citation. You can also use the abbreviations “p.” or “pp.” to mark the page.

      In your third draft, check everything again and polish your paper. Arrange your reference section in accordance with the requirements of APA’s Publication Manual.

  4. Look for feedback.
  5. Ask someone else to read your dissertation. This may be your colleague or somebody you consider being an expert in the field of your investigation, or just someone who does well with grammar.

  6. Be prepared to be criticized.
  7. Don’t be taken aback by the critical recommendations. Use this feedback to make your dissertation stronger.

  8. Format the whole paper in APA style.
  9. Follow the rules of the title page formatting, pay attention to the styles of headings and subheadings, enumerate the pages properly, edit your tables and figures, and check if the seriated paragraphs are marked correctly.
